August in the Gallery

The gallery is open Thursday to Sunday and showing selected works from the stock room.

Sally Armfield has also joined the Eltham South Fine Art group with some of her beautiful botanical work. Sally grew up in Eltham and is the daughter of well known artists Joan and David Armfield.

Other artists who are currently showing in the gallery include Piers Bateman, Janet R. Boddy, Tony Muratore, Clifton Pugh, Shane Pugh, Jenni Mitchell, Mervyn Hannan, Sally Duncan, Geoffrey Davidson and more. 

The showcase has new silver and gemstone jewellery and a range of new textiles are on show. 

Painting and pastel classes with Jenni Mitchell and Mervyn Hannan are held Thursday to Saturday – new students welcome. 

In September we will be holding an exhibition in the gallery of work by Eltham South Fine Art students.

about the Poets’

Thomas Shapcott   Tom Shapcott

Queensland-born Thomas Shapcott has been publishing poetry since the 1960s and is also the author of  eight novels, libretti, and some non-fiction works. .He also engaged with Australian literature as editor of the University of Queensland Press poetry list in the 1970s, as Director of the Literature Board of the Arts Australia Council in the 1980s, and as the first Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide. Some of his book titles are Selected Poems (UQP, 1978), The City of Empty Rooms (Salt Publishing, 2006), and Parts of Us (UQP, 2012).                                                                                                                                         photo of Tom by Nicholas Walton-Healey.

Judith Rodrigeuz is a poet, librettist and teacher. Her collections – some contain her linocuts – include New And Selected Poems (University of Queensland Press, 1988), The Cold (National Library of Australia, 1994), and chapbooks Terror (2002) and Manatee (Picaro Press, 2008). The Hanging of Minnie Thwaites – a long ballad with historical account and lyrics – was issued by Arcade Books in 2012. She has read at numerous venues world-­‐wide and taught in universities in Australia, London, Jamaica, the United States and India.

Melbourne poet and performer Kristin Henry has published two non-­‐fiction works, five poetry collections and a verse novel. She has been shortlisted for the N.S.W. Premiers Award and twice been the feature for Radio National’s programme Poetica. Kristin has established a rapport with audiences throughout Australia, her native United States and the U.K. In 2012 UWAP published her critically acclaimed verse novel All The Way Home, described in Australian Book Review as having ‘the ring of truth, fabulously lyrical and concise’.

The Late Winter Show has been extended into Early Spring

Screen Shot 2013-06-03 at 11.24.19 AMThere is still time to catch THE LATE WINTER SHOW at Eltham South Fine Art Gallery. It is now extended into Early Spring. There are great works to see and the new Spring Garden coming to life with colour.

THE SPRING SHOW will open 29 September. There will be new works from gallery artists Jenni Mitchell & Mervyn Hannan with a Spring Theme. Janet R. Boddy and Ron Reynolds will also be showing new works in the Spring Show.

A new collection of semi precious stone & silver Jewellery has also been added to the Show case.

Towards the end of the year will be our long awaited exhibition featuring two Journeys to Mongolia. More on this later.

The Late Winter ShowCome and join us in the gallery for the opening and share a drink and nibbles.

The Late Winter Show includes several large landscape paintings and a series of small recent still life works using fruits from the orchard garden. Works from a Coastal Norway Snow Shower, the Fiery Sky of a Western Victorian Sunset and a Heavy Mt. Buller Cloudstudy.  There are pastel works from Mervyn Hannan depicting the Flinders Ranges and the Digby Cottage. Still Life from Hilary Jackman and Bush Studies from Piers Bateman. Also included are several recent paintings by Ron Reynolds; Landscapes of Warrandyte and Still Life.

Works by Retro Eltham artists include Grace Mitchell, Alan Martin, Sonia Skipper, Leslie Sinclair and others.

From our recent visit to Dili, Timor Leste we have brought back some traditional textile including  Tias weavings. We are hoping to help support the community we stayed with through some gallery sales.

PAINTING CLASSES have recommenced for the term with regular classes being held Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The Autumn Show

You are invited to the launch of our Autumn Show to open 3 March, 2012 at 2.00pm.

 

THE AUTUMN SHOW introduces several new artists to the gallery.

Janet R. Boddy is an Eltham resident who has been exhibiting regularly over a long career.  Emily Tuke is a talented emerging artist who has been a student of Jenni Mitchell’s for several years and is at the beginning of her artistic career. Tony Muratore also has a long exhibiting history of painting and printmaking in the Eltham district as well as being a regular commuter between his homeland Italy where he retires to work in his summer studio. New works are on show from the stock room and studios family artists Mervyn Hannan, the late Grace Mitchell, Jenni Mitchell, Damien Skipper and the late Sonia Skipper.  The late Geoffrey Eggleston is the gallery poet and painter. And our Mongolian artist Tugsoo Sodnom. 

 

Regular Painting Classes continue in the gallery studio school and visitors are invited to wander through the old family orchard garden.

Gallery Opens January 31 with an extension to  THE SUMMER SHOW until the end of Summer.

Come and visit the gallery and help us celebrate the new look gallery; we have been busy with a few changes over the Christmas break.

The gallery will  now feature Seasonal exhibitions with changing work as well as some guest exhibition throughout the year. Details will be posted shortly.

Painting Classes for 2013 begin Thursday 31 January. Classes available Thursday morning and afternoons & Friday and Saturday mornings.

The orchard garden is open for visitors.

The Summer Show exhibition is a selection of family works and friends that include Grace Mitchell (dec.), Jenni Mitchell, Mervyn Hannan, Sonia Skipper (dec.), Damien Skipper, Geoffrey Eggleston (dec.) and Tugsoo Sodnom (Mongolia). Much of the subject matter showcases recent journeys by Jenni & Mervyn to the ends of the earth including The Antarctic, The Arctic, Norway, Mongolia, The Australian desert and Eltham.

Grace Mitchell (1916 -2011) lived on this property since 1948. Grace passed away 2011 and the gallery is her legacy showcasing much of her sculpture and textile work. The gallery was once her pastry business and the orchard garden her pantry. Grace exhibited regularly in Open Studio exhibitions for many years and gained a Fine Art degree from RMIT (PIT) in the 1980s.

Jenni Mitchell – (1955) daughter of Grace Mitchell. Jenni grew up on this Eltham property and began painting at Montsalvat from age 10; later Fine Art Diploma  RMIT (PIT) and a Master of Visual Art  Monash Uni. Travelled extensively to wild places including the Australian Desert, The Antarctic, The Arctic, Norway and Mongolia.  Work held in many public and private collections in Australia and internationally.

Mervyn Hannan – (1954)  grew up Eltham son of Montsalvat artists Sonia Skipper & Joe Hannan. Travelled extensively working as an artist and musician.  Works in exhibition primarily pastel on paper from Mongolia and Flinders Ranges. Work held in public and private collections in Australia and internationally.

Sonia Skipper – (1918 -2009) Founding Montsalvat artist, sculptor and painter. Student of Justus Jorgensen exhibited regularly in Eltham before retiring to Renmark SA. Made a South Australian Living Treasure.                       

  

Damien Skipper – (1956) current resident, grew up at Montsalvat son of Matcham Skipper. Diploma Fine Art RMIT (PIT). Exhibited regularly since the 1980s. Major work as a painter working in oil and musician – guitar and song. Damien often creates a theme series. Work in many private collections.

Geoffrey Eggleston – (1944 – 2008)

Primarily a poet and founder of the Montsalvat Poetry Festival in Eltham. Considered himself a mystic. Painter of fine and delicate still life and watercolour work. Studied National Gallery School.

Tugsoo Sodnom – (1955) Mongolian born studied in Russian University gaining Master of Visual Art. Travelled and exhibited frequently throughout Europe, the US and Australia. Working in oil, acrylic multimedia and as a printmaker.
