Petschel House was built circa 1854 by German settlers. The large freeloading has been sold off over the years and today is just 14 acres.
Eltham artists Jenni Mitchell and Mervyn Hannan purchased the property in 2016 and have expanded the gardens as well as build art studios and a fine art gallery. The formal gardens are Paul Bangay in style and the native gardens reflective of Eltham and a Gordon Ford.
The large orchard consists of several varieties of apples, figs, a citrus hedge and mixed stone fruits. The produce from the garden is used in conserves and feeding the family during the year.
The original Coach house (once stables for the Cob & Co coach) have been turned into an art gallery and Picture Framing Studio. Jenni’s main studio was designed by the Eltham architect Robert Marshall. A small studio on the property is used as a portrait studio and at time a teaching studio for classes and workshops.
Visitors may walk around the 14 acres moving between the gardens and down to the large Pond, which currently would like a little more rain!
We will be open most weekends now until Christmas. Please phone with enquiries and to schedule a time to visit, outside of the weekend hours.
Our recent book titled Gariwerd Grampians: From the mountains to the Plains was launched earlier this year and copies will be available at the gallery for purchase. Several paintings are hanging published in the book.
We look forward to catching up with you over the weekend.
